Sports Massage by Andrea

Andrea Naugle

“No session is ever the same. My work is always changing. I use specific sports massage techniques for each muscle group, including deep tissue work, stretching, and neuromuscular re-education . The main objectives of neuromuscular re-education are balancing the nervous and muscular system, aligning the body, and increasing range of motion. Stretching helps keep the muscles loose and limber after physical activity, preventing muscle adhesions that limit performance. If you are an athlete and you are not getting sport massage, you are not achieving your optimal results.”

Andrea Naugle has been a Certified Massage Therapist Since June 2007. She completed a 750 Hour program and obtained a letter of excellence upon graduation. She has been a member of the American Massage Therapeutic Association since 2006. Andrea completed her Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Studies with a minor in Psychology at Cal State East Bay in 2004. Prior to that, she was a sports teacher in San Francisco. Currently, she works at Sunnyvale Physical Therapy as a Physical Therapy Aide and at RPM Therapy in San Jose on Wednesdays and Sundays. She will devote more days to RPM as her massage schedule fills up.

Andrea began her education in massage because she is a believer of holistic health. “I believe the body can heal from within. Massage is a great way to help facilitate the healing process and help rehabilitate the body back into homeostasis. Western society believes that rehabilitation consists of “pill popping” and surgeries. The healing process takes time and pills are sometimes necessary. We often use this as a quick fix to get back to life as soon as possible. While massage has many wonderful therapeutic benefits, it is undervalued. Massage is seen as a tool for enhancing wellness and recovery. Massage is a big part of the total wellness equation and I strongly believe in the medical aspect of massage.”

In her massage education, Andrea studied both Eastern and Western Modalities. This includes Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Pregnancy, Acupressure, Lymphatic and Sports massage. She focuses her work more into rehabilitation care from injuries by targeting specific muscle groups. Although she loves “spa” work for emotional distress, she is an advocate for using massage during physical activities.

Andrea’s specialization is the use of Myofascial Release. Myofascial Release provides sustained pressure on specific muscles. It’s a very effective technique to eliminate pain and restore motion. Fascia is web-like tissue that runs through the entire body and connects our muscular structure. When fascia is at its normal state, it’s able to move and be stretched. When we experience physical trauma or injury this fascia begins to tighten, causing a lot of pain and discomfort.

“I am a very active individual and have seen how sports massage can help you become a better athlete, emotionally and physically. I am a college swimmer, run marathons, and just completed my first Triathlon. I have had the opportunity to work with Team in Training at the San Francisco Marathon summer of 2007, and I was part of the massage team for the San Francisco Nike Women’s Marathon. Massage is highly beneficial after a workout. I have seen personally how much faster you can recover after a massage. Other activities I enjoy are backpacking, surfing, snowboarding, and mountain biking.”

So if you are an athlete, Andrea would love to work with you. She understands the injuries an athlete goes through and she is well prepared to help you become great at your game.
